Has it really come to this? In a world where children starve to death or families are afflicted by natural disasters, we are now asked to give money and gift vouchers to pensioners. My God.

Id just like to mention Burma and Ethiopia. The absolutely heart wrenching stories and images that we have witnessed over the last few weeks were enough to make me donate. These were and continue to be people who are seriously in need of assistance. They are dying - literally starving to death, with little sanitation and minimal health facilities.

But seriously, do the pensioners really expect me to give them money when there are people much much worse off than them.

Even looking in our own backyard, what about the appalling state of indigenous health right here in Australia? Don't they deserve more than whingeing pensioners? Yes, they do.

Today Tonight and A Current Affair have a lot to answer for when they peddle this nonsense.

Aged pensioners in Australia are about to receive a $500 bonus per person. This in on top of an increase in the utilities allowance from just over $100 to $500 per year. And indexed after that.

To a large extent, living on the pension is about budgeting properly. If they cant do that, should government step in to fix their problems?

Even worse, should i spend my hard earned money on giving them charity? Oh, i forgot, i already do through my taxes.

Enough already - we get the point. You are a bored bunch of old fogies who have nothing better to do but complain. You always have, you always will.

I agree. I think either you fund your own retirement, or be compulsorily euthanised.

I hate to say this but i agree too, and i bet we will looked upon as the crueliest people but i think we are the most honest, yes they dont receive a lot of money on their pension , but they have so much more discounts than anyone else!! public transport costs them $2;50 all day ticket to travel anywhere by bus, train, ferry ALL DAY!!...their medication is only $5 unbeleivable , then all they do is whinge...i have to pay full price for everything and im far from rich....sob can you adopt me?? please

What a bunch of ignorant hicks.

if you feel so strongly about saving dying ethiopians then sell your house car and possessions and send money...do it today.

Betcha dont help.

st6op whinbging about people kind enough to go out of their way to help. Its not always about money...some of these people are in need of company as well.

Pensioners deserve our help...after all they sspent their lives building this country gfor you all to enjoy. Be grateful and hope to God you dont die old and lonely.

That first poster is a friggin' idiot. It's a totally different concept. Have a look at the website, it's not about money, it's about helping out with basic tasks and having someone to talk to. If i could pop around and help the burmese with their fence repairs, clean some houses and talk about the good 'ol days, i would. I totally agree that more people should help 3rd world famine, but don't take your frustration out on the oldies. They just need a little help and one day we will too.

Yes we might get discounts and prescription medications at a low rate but remember we only get $280 a week on the pension.
I can afford to go out as my rent is $205 a week and given the comment of the person who wanted to be adopted I bet he is earning more than $280 per week so if thats the case he does not need to be adopted.

Young, Grumpy Insular Tool (to quote you). WTF do you get off having a go at anyone for helping another human being?? Why is your concept of 'cause' greater than any other?? Who made you the ultimate in this topic? The world has a gaggle of plights & causes ALL needing the compassion, generosity, time, empathy and kindness of anyone who can give it. Everyone who does even the smallest thing that makes the smallest difference to another should be applauded. What's the point in being a do gooder if you counteract with this snotty arrogance?? YOU judge charity while epsousing yourself?? Obviously the virtue of it is lost on you... BTW you are inexorably marching towards old age & you don't get to chose... I hope your words dont haunt you!!

Everyone, help where you can, how you can, whom you can. Be grateful you are able... Mother Theresa, thanks for the fine example of selfless charity.

One day you ignorant bum you will be old and who will you turn to for help. We (Old Age Pensioners) are not asking for a handout just help. I am finding it hard to do just ordinary housework (age 77) and have been too proud to ask for help, but I have not registered and hope I can find someone to not only help me but also to become a much needed friend.

Oh it's all very well to tell our penioners that they should have saved; but don't forget a majority of these people raised their families with only one bread winner in the family, not two which is considered the norm today. It's blatant to see the difference between their children and the youngsters of today. You don't see that the government has let our pensioners down and are letting families down. Why is their so much violence, suicide etc amongst the teens, because the both parents are working and no one is home for the child when they have finished school. Break the cycle and help someone older and more importantly instill that value into a child.

My mother, now passed away, had to survive on a single pension for 29 years. She lived in public housing and every time she received a pension increase, she also received a rental increase. She did her best to budget with what she received. She had to sell her car, her only mode of independent transport because she couldnt afford the increasing costs to keep it,and she didnt have nearby public transport. The outcome of that was she started spending more and more time at home and her health declined. She lost a major part of her independence. People say pensioners should have planned for their future. My father and mother had their plans. My father was a hard worker and making plans for his retirement. He became ill and within a month passed away, aged 52, with a good many working days ahead of him to work on his retirement plan. There wasnt compulsory super when he passed away. People can make all the plans they want for their future, but keep in mind, things dont always go to plan. No one knows what the future holds for them. Thank heaven there ARE people who are only too happy to step in and give a hand, and you probably might find those that do help, more than likely help out with other charity organisations as well. I know I do.

Charity begins at home and always should these people built the land of freedom that you enjoy today so maybe alittle thanks isn't too much to ask from us all and as far as you using the word god in your blog I'm no religious freak but he would be appalled by your attitude. Can't wait until your in need of help in your golden years you small minded piece of trash!!!

About Just Grumpy

Im not a right wing nut job, far from it. I just believe that the world doesnt owe you a living, you make your own luck (was that Kevin Rudd?) and if you work hard you can succeed.

Thats not to say that we shouldnt help those who cant help themselves. I have a firm belief in giving a helping hand up to those who genuinely need it. (please give generously to my linked charities)

I call myself a realist and i want to tell it like it is. Somebody has to speak the truth. Because seriously, what a selfish bunch of insular tools we have become in today's dreamy Australia.

Maybe we arent so different to the rest of the world. And maybe it was always this way.

Anyway, until things change, i remain young and grumpy.
