I could have given this story a heading of "Fat People should Pay More to Fly", but i didn't want to be too offensive. That's not true actually. I'm afraid of fat people, so I'm trying to hide my true feelings.
I dont think fat people are carrying their weight on flights, and im sick of subsidising their travel.
But seriously, airlines and analysts are warning of massive increases in fuel surcharges, given the recent rise in the price of oil. I can understand the rise, it makes sense for airlines to increase ticket prices. When their costs rise, they must pass it on.
What i don't get is why they are allowed to itemise fuel costs as a separate charge. In reality, fuel is just one of the costs that an airline has, and not every expense is itemised when buying a ticket. I mean, they don't charge you individually for the cost of the pilot, or flight attendant, or baggage handling.
But it does allow them to charge you more AFTER you have purchased a ticket, if the fuel price goes up. That's not my fault if the prices go up - that's their bad management for not predicting the rise. Hey, welcome to business.
Anyway back to the point. Given they have itemised the fuel surcharge, it gives airlines a unique opportunity to charge people by how much they weigh.
In other words, if you are fat - you pay more. And why shouldn't you? If you turn up at the airport with too much luggage, they charge you extra. And so they should.
I resent it that as a thin person, i pay the exact same amount as obese people - even though they are costing much more in fuel to carry. Thats right, fat people use more fuel.
I suggest that when people book a flight, they must input their weight, and thus pay accordingly. Then, upon check in, everybody must jump on the scales, just like you do with your luggage.
If your weight is under your estimation, wow, you get some money back. But if you are over, get your credit card or travellers cheques out to pay the difference.
That's fair. I'm sick of carrying fat people on flights - thankfully not literally. You weigh more, you pay more. Simple really.

I am overweight and I actually agree with you. It sucks when people have to pay due to excess baggage, I was one them, now im 300 or more pounds. It only makes sense that if a normal size person has to pay more, that an overweight person should pay more too. Sorry for your difficulties :)
