I have spoken here before about the fact that higher petrol prices will inevitably lead to less cars on the road. And that's a good thing. As i drove out and about in the suburbs today, Sunday of all days, traffic was appalling.

But there are going to be even more benefits to high petrol prices - a punishing blow to those who drive big 4WD's. Oh yes, i can hear you moaning already about these monstrosities which take over the roads and do terrible damage to the environment. And I'm not talking about their "off road" experiences, which most of them never see.

And don't you just hate 4WD's at carparks! How much space do they take up? And good luck backing out of your space, when you cant see a goddamn thing because of them.

The beauty of 4WD's - if there is one, is that they chew up an enormous amount of fuel, thus costing their owners a bucket load of money just to keep them on the road. In addition to the fact that they cost a bomb to begin with.

All in order to take the kids to the weekly ballet class, soccer training, creche, child care centre. And who needs 8 seats anyhow?

So while you worry about your extra fuel costs every week, take a moment to think about those 4WD owners who are doing it much tougher than you. Schadenfreude? You betcha.

Some examples (average 500km per week):

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, 4.0 Grande Auto (Cost: $75,430)
Litres per 100km: 13.2
Weekly Cost @ $1.65 per litre = $108.9 (Annual $5662.8)
Weekly Cost @ goal of $2.50 per litre = $165 (Annual $8580)

Mitsubishi Pajero, 3.8 GLX Auto (Cost: $52,790)
Litres per 100km: 13.5
Weekly Cost @ $1.65 per litre = $111.38 (Annual $5791.5)
Weekly Cost @ goal of $2.50 per litre = $168.75 (Annual $8775)

Ford Territory, 4.0 Ghia SSS (Cost: $51,990)
Litres per 100km: 12.2
Weekly Cost @ $1.65 per litre = $100.65 (Annual $5233.8)
Weekly Cost @ goal of $2.50 per litre = $152.5 (Annual $7930)

Nissan Patrol, 4.8 Ti Auto (Cost $75,690)
Litres per 100km: 17.2
Weekly Cost @ $1.65 per litre = $141.9 (Annual $7378.8)
Weekly Cost @ goal of $2.50 per litre = $215 (Annual $11,180)

Wow. Gotta love that Nissan. $7,378 per year in petrol.

Think of it this way. The higher the price of petrol, the more pain will be felt by 4WD owners, and eventually there will be less on the road. Now that's a nice thought.

About Just Grumpy

Im not a right wing nut job, far from it. I just believe that the world doesnt owe you a living, you make your own luck (was that Kevin Rudd?) and if you work hard you can succeed.

Thats not to say that we shouldnt help those who cant help themselves. I have a firm belief in giving a helping hand up to those who genuinely need it. (please give generously to my linked charities)

I call myself a realist and i want to tell it like it is. Somebody has to speak the truth. Because seriously, what a selfish bunch of insular tools we have become in today's dreamy Australia.

Maybe we arent so different to the rest of the world. And maybe it was always this way.

Anyway, until things change, i remain young and grumpy.
