Build Up Not Out

While stupid people call for more land to be opened up on the outskirts of cities, there is an abundance of space in a little place id like to name up. Therefore, I'm going to single handedly address the housing crisis in one simple phrase - build up not out. Thats right, end the urban sprawl.

Make no mistake about it, this is a logical solution to the problem. And cheaper in the long run. Whoever it was that had this ridiculous nightmare that is the Australian Dream really was a nutter. 4 or 5 bedrooms on a large block? Totally mad.

That sort of stuff might work in the country where the land is being put to some productive use, but in the city or suburbs? Its crazyville.

Think of all the waste in infrastructure costs - the burden of which falls to the taxpayer - ie me. Why should i be contributing to roads, public transport, schools, hospitals etc etc etc, just so Darren and Sharon can live in trashville?

Don't get me wrong. I don't want to share an apartment building with Darren and Sharon, nor do i want to listen to their dirty kids at 3 in the morning.

But i also don't want a sprawl so great that would lead to the connection of Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Because where does it stop? If we keep opening up land, then lakes entrance would be a suburb of Melbourne, with Albury a suburb of Sydney.

There is ample space upwards...endless some might say. How is it that major cities in the world, like New York and Paris understood the problem of urban sprawl over the last 2 centuries? Yet here in Australia, building out seems to be the major solution.

It's time to change. Inner city and suburb dwellers beware - your nimbyness has been noted, and we are coming to get you.
