Dont Buy Wattle Ridge Cage Eggs

I'm not just targeting Wattle Ridge here. I'm targeting all those producers of cage eggs, purely because of the cruelty to the chickens of being cooped in a tight wire cage with no room to move or stretch, having their beaks trimmed and subjected to up to 18 hours a day of natural light.

So why Wattle Ridge? Because they peddle the spin that their eggs are environmentally friendly.

They claim to be supporting a renewable resource have environmental packaging, use recycled water and have created a tree planting program. Don't be fooled. Its a marketing ploy.

Yes, Wattle Ridge are just another Pace Farm egg producer. Pace Farm are one of the biggest egg producers in Australia. And they are conning you with their environmentally friendly hoax.

What is the purpose of being environmentally friendly if the eggs are produced in cruel conditions? Yes, Pace Farm and other cage egg producers engage in cruelty to animals. Despicable cruelty.

If you have ever been to a cage egg producing farm, you will know what i mean. But here's a picture in case you haven't:

Disgusting isn't it? This is what wattle ridge and pace farm do to their chickens.

This is how it is described in a report in the Sydney Morning Herald a few years back:

To prevent them pecking, all birds have their beaks clipped before arrival. They are raised elsewhere in sterile conditions for 16 weeks and then an entire shed's worth is delivered to West Wyalong. The birds will stay in the shed until they are 72 weeks old at which time their productivity begins to fall and there is a rise in age-related disease which causes a natural increase in flock mortality (such as the development of prolapse uterus condition, egg peritonitis). They are taken away, slaughtered and processed for pet food.

Even the amount of light the hens are given is carefully calculated to maximise laying - 15 hours of artificial light every day. "It's a pleasant atmosphere," says the facility manager, Matt Lynch. "It's 38 degrees outside and it's cool in here and there's no flies."

So don't buy wattle ridge eggs, don't buy pace farm eggs, and don't buy any eggs that are from chickens in cages.

We wouldn't allow this type of behaviour for other animals, why should we tolerate it for chickens?

Settle only for free range eggs, not even the barn laid eggs meet real standards. God knows what the RSPCA are thinking when they give barn laid eggs the tick of approval. Its a crock, even barn laid is cruel.

If you can find free range eggs by producers who don't do cage eggs, then you will be making a contribution to the environment. Put the WattleRidge spin crap aside.

Please, please seek an alternative. Or if you really feel passionate, give the wattleridge guys a call and tell them what you really think: 1300 653 447.

Yes! I agree. In the UK these are called battery eggs. I guess because in the factories there a batteries of cages lined up. And when the poor chickens reach the end of their useful egg-producing life, they get made into cheap frozen chicken nuggets. So don't buy them either!
