The following are the planned personal income tax rates for the financial year 2009 to 2010. These rates were announced in the May 2008 Rudd Government budget which delivered substantial tax cuts for the 2008/2009 financial year.
It is unclear if these rates will change in the upcoming Rudd Government Budget, due to be brought down in May. Please check back for updates. These tax rates for 2009/2010 extend the tax cuts for 2008/2009 as announced in last year's budget.
UPDATE: The following tax rates have been confirmed in the Rudd & Swan 2009 Budget.
You will be able to submit your tax return to the ATO from July 1, and for most people they must be submitted by October 31.
2009 to 2010 Financial year Australia Personal Income Tax Rates:

I call myself a realist and i want to tell it like it is. Somebody has to speak the truth. Because seriously, what a selfish bunch of insular tools we have become in today's dreamy Australia.
Maybe we arent so different to the rest of the world. And maybe it was always this way.

What chance that rudd and swan will give us more tax cuts in this years budget? I make more than 100k and dont get the $900. Would be nice to see some more tax cuts for people like me.
The one above me who said that she make more than 100k, and they expect to get the $900!!! dream on your already earning enough.
If you can't manage your money thats your problem, the thing that gets me mad is that people who earn so much they want more more more! bloody money.
STOP BEING SO GREEDY!!!
More tax cuts to night - no chance. If anything you will be paying more tax to pay for the $900 gift (which in my opinion should never been paid). Please remember we have a Labor government, so the plan will be to tax the rich and give it to the poor, run up lots of debt and hand a basket case of an economy to the Liberals to fix. Just remember the majority of Australia's wanted this, so no complaints!
If you were owning just over 100k and you had responsibilities of looking after a family of say 4 would you not want the $900. The money could be less then 900 but it could help to furthmore some ones education. Or buy that laptop you might need to increase your learning skill at school. For more sufficient things. What would you spend your money on. And plus if their happy were all happy. THe government has many other policies to benefit people that owe 100k or more so do they really need it or do they just want it. Depending on the situation of the household any one can want it but it seems the government has decided that people who owe below 100k do not need the cut. The government gives hand out for childeren any way so all should be good.
The one two avove this comment is agreeably funny but true. I think... but if it was really giving to the poor would the 900 not benefit the poor...

Regarding the above comment. Maybe you are happy to work 38 hours a week and enjoy the spare time around this. I guarantee that the person making 100+k is working 50+ hours a week and has invested years of time into university. Maybe you to could achieve this if you put in the effort. Based on your above "opinion" im fairly certain this will however never occur.
Why shouldn't they get a cut, they are taxed a huge amount of money and thus contribute more to society then you ever will. Maybe you should be thanking them when you enjoy spending your $900 check, they after all paid for it.
My hubby and I have worked hard for years, earning minimal wages whilst having our children and yes, we received a bit of help from the government along the way.
The hard work paid off and hubby landed a fantastic job that pays over 100k. We could finally afford that mortgage - oops- house we always dreamt of, and life is good.
But there are two sides to every coin. He also pays a HUGE amount of tax. Our mortgage eats up a good chunk of his pay (Im not complaining just stating the facts) and as both of our jobs require vehicles, we also have car repayments.
I choose to work part time because A) I love my job and B) it sets a good example for our 6 children.
People should not assume that because you earn over 100k you are living the high life. I have been a low income earner and I think that the supplements, rent assistance, health care cards etc that we get in Australia make life pretty comfortable if managed well and as long as people live within their means.
We dont receive a fortnightly payment off the gov anymore because our income does not need a top up. We pay for every medical expense because health care cards are ( and should be) for the low income earners. We also pay a medicare surcharge. The more you earn - the more you pay!
I dont believe we should be given a $900 hand out, nor should anyone else for that matter (including my brother-in-law who has been living out of Australia for two years - way to stimulate Canada's economy K.Rudd). If the gov wants to throw money around put it where it is needed, hospitals, schools, roads etc. Or spread it around with an across the board tax cut.
Now what of people who earn over 200K.... don't get me started on those bastards! Only kidding.
How do you know I'm a bastard? (I suspect you were only partly kidding) :)
No sh1t Sherlock. Been there, done all that, worked my way up from the low income, studied hard, got better jobs, ran a company on the side, took 2 consulting contracts in parallel and earnt 200k. Pay an absolute bucket load in tax and yes the harder you work, the more this country rorts you.
First 30k for everyone should be tax free, then flat rate of 25% after that. Simple/fair/cross-the-board tax system. Want more money? Work harder. DAMN SIMPLE AUSTRALIA.
Otherwise, all the hard workers, managers, entrepreneurs just say "screw you" and move overseas where they will get a fair deal in many instances for their hard work. And when a hard worker or senior manager moves overseas, guess what, they can take 1000 jobs with them that ordinary Australians could have had back home. Think twice Australian government.
Oh wait, I already moved to Tokyo. Sayonara.
the tax rate in the UK is effectively 31% up to £48,000 then 51% after that so its no better except that houses cost fortunes more here for very little compared to Australian Homes. As my mum always said it's all swings and roundabouts.
The government is screwed. Income tax and payroll tax should not exist. Why is it fair for the lazy government to take a chunk of your hard earned cash and waste it on a bunch of meaningless crap!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree to an extent, the government takes our hard earned money and spend it on crap like sending 150 greedy politicians for a fully paid holiday to copenhagen to talk about crap that came to know conclusion. The money spent on that could have been put too much better use. The price of general living is on the increase and will keep on increasing. However the wages arent rising to compensate. I dont agree that there should be no taxes, everyone should pay taxes as that keeps our economy ticking over. However I don't belive we should be left to pick up the pieces when our government badly manages the surplus.
maybe the $900 could be used to increase the literacy skills of you cretins
Well wages seem to stay the same unless you are able to work your way up the ladder. In WA the gas water and electricity bills are gone up and the Liberals don't give a stuff about the poor. So I'm glad that rudd gave out the $900. At least Rudd has given a little to the pensioners.
Man all he want is money!! what benfit do we get as a worker in NSW... Living on the street and still pay tax... so sad
Everybody Talking Taxes, Taxes, Taxes...U have to look around for saving Taxes..Like Rebate ro investment things, and at d end you will get benefits from it isn't it ?
Huh?
My husband and I have been both "rich" earning $100K each from our own successful business, but both working 6 days a week 15 hours a day and now on mediocre wages of $75K totalled together (working 40 hours and 15 hours a week). Lots of stress caused medical condition, so had to sell. Stress gone, we are much happier, healthier, our kids are better for it. We had 6 investments properties and sold the lot, no benefit in providing homes for everyone else while we worked our guts out. We have now gone on more holidays in the last 4 years than what we did for the previous 20. Just budget your money and you appreciate the little extras more. I can see it from both sides, but at the moment there is no financial incentive to strive so much to kill yourself in the end.
Is the tax rates for the retired the same as the non retired?
