Thousands of Indian Students have protested in Melbourne to bring attention to the recent spate of attacks on many of their countrymen.

What started as a peaceful display turned into a mini riot, with at least 2 arrests. The Indian students hurled items at police and stormed Flinders Street Station.

I'm afraid that the Indian Students have just lost the Public relations war on this issue. Peaceful protests in Australia are a way of life and are a good way of raising public and government awareness. Violent protests have no place in this society.

This rioting by the students will turn public opinion against them. The organisers should be condemned for allowing this protest to escalate into violence. I hate to say it, but these Indian students make the CFMEU protests look like a mothers club meeting.

Hi Young Grump being an Indian who lived in Aus for 12 years who is currently living in india i'am with you 100%, I would never think Australia as racist and as you pointed out very well any society will have the shades of discrimination and sterio typing the whole nation is childish and any protest which is not peaceful will sway the sympathy from these students and will be condemned by the larger section of the society who might be otherwise emphathetic towards these guys.

You want to see racism of Indians? Go to Dubai and see how the arabs treat people from the sub continent. These poor people from villages get paid a pittance for their hard work and effort to build the arabs pyramids of the middle east.

These people are subjected to daily torture of sub standard living conditions, exposure to 45+ degrees temperature working conditions and the arabs dont even pay them the respect they deserve for buiding their empire.

Whereas in Australia these people are given a chance to live like other westerners and treated equally amongst other old and new Australians.

If Indians want to be treated equally they must accept that Australians are treated with the same violence and hardships these young students are subjected to.

Minority groups are treated equally if not better then some of our less fortunate Australians.

You indians are the biggest bunch of greedy hypocritical people ever. All you do is complain and want and want, u take and dont give back! U smell our country up with your unwashed armpits and curry and quite frankly i would love to see the back of you. I am glad people robbed and bashed you and hope it is a more common practice!

Last weekend there were 11 stabbings in Melbourne. However, this was buried deep under the story about how an Indian man was stabbed when he was hanging around outside a train station at 2am. Victoria also has the highest homicide rate in Australia. Although media outlets would love to have you believe it, these Indian people getting stabbed is just a small, sensationalised part of the larger issue, which is that general violence trends are on the rise. But what do I know, I'm just the trash the British 'kicked out'. (http://www.theage.com.au/national/states-grim-reality-homicide-rate-tops-nation-20100313-q59p.html)

About Just Grumpy

Im not a right wing nut job, far from it. I just believe that the world doesnt owe you a living, you make your own luck (was that Kevin Rudd?) and if you work hard you can succeed.

Thats not to say that we shouldnt help those who cant help themselves. I have a firm belief in giving a helping hand up to those who genuinely need it. (please give generously to my linked charities)

I call myself a realist and i want to tell it like it is. Somebody has to speak the truth. Because seriously, what a selfish bunch of insular tools we have become in today's dreamy Australia.

Maybe we arent so different to the rest of the world. And maybe it was always this way.

Anyway, until things change, i remain young and grumpy.
