Woolworths have started playing this really cool Greek ad again featuring husband and wife Stavro and Maria. I don't speak Greek but i don't think i need to. I understand pretty much what they are saying without knowing the language.
And that makes this a clever ad. Its catchy, it features the advertised brand prominently and it has the memorable music. Its also funny which is a big help. What also works here is the fact that Maria and Stavros are an older couple. People can relate to them - its much the same in many of our parent's homes.
Woolworths are advertising Maria and Stavros as being "Fresh Food People" with the supermarket's bag in the background. But what i don't get is the whole premise of the ad is that Woolworths are the fresh food people, even though Stavros and Maria obviously have their own fresh food in the backyard. Why would they need to visit the supermarket for vegetables?
Perhaps i am actually missing something by not speaking Greek. Maybe they are saying that they need to shop at Woolworths because the birds are eating all their home grown vegetables. Somebody who speaks Greek want to translate for me? Other than my little query, its still a good commercial.
About Just Grumpy
Thats not to say that we shouldnt help those who cant help themselves. I have a firm belief in giving a helping hand up to those who genuinely need it. (please give generously to my linked charities)
I call myself a realist and i want to tell it like it is. Somebody has to speak the truth. Because seriously, what a selfish bunch of insular tools we have become in today's dreamy Australia.
Maybe we arent so different to the rest of the world. And maybe it was always this way.
Anyway, until things change, i remain young and grumpy.

haha i love this commercial.
all i know is that at the end stavros mutters "now i can read in peace"
:) makes me chuckle. :)
can we get a whole translation? i really want to know all they say :( it's such a cute ad.
They say nothing about Woolworths in the ad. It's basically Maria telling Stavros that there are birds in his tomatoes, Stavros telling Maria that he wants to read his news paper, Maria then telling him he needs to take more care of his tomatoes, and Stavros ending it by saying "now I can get back to reading my newspaper". Well, that's what my Greek step-mother told me anyway.
Great, thats cleared that up. Thanks very much!

ty for the translation :) <3
Maria's punch line is actually: "finally you did something good" - a phrase often directed at Greek men by their wives :(
This ad is clever, no argument there. What has totally gone over your head is the fact that this billion dollar corporation is duping the average punter with this grass-roots community warm'n'fuzzy propaganda. It's insidious but typical corporate mentality. Visit any new Coles or Woolies and learn how they put small business out of business, how they bully their suppliers into submission. I suggest you start your educational journey here www.zeitgeistmovie.com and may it lead you to some level of consciousness.
Thanks anon. I appreciate what you are saying, but i wasnt making commentary on the operation of major corporations like Woolworths. Its just my observation about an advert and how effective it is. I dont disagree with your statement. YG
zeitgeistmovie, yes I agree. Watched it and my eyes are now wide open.
I think the idea of this ad is to show that woolies cares about fresh food as much as maria and stavros obviously do...and that is why they should buy their other groceries from woolies..the ones that they don't grow themselves.
woolworths imports 17 tonnes of chinese garlic grown in human waste and then bleached from xiang province, may be we should let maria and stavros watch the birds in their back yard play in human shit, and realise how woolworths shits on consumers and australians. I saw this while doing filming for taday tonight
The add is totally stupid. Maria curses Stravos for the birds in the garden...like its his fault. Oh please!!!!
And if you think the food at Woolies is fresh, think again.
