Another Airbus A330-200 incident - Jetstar Airbus A300 Plane Emergency Landing in Guam

A Jetstar Airbus A330-200 aircraft has been forced to make an emergency landing in Guam after a cockpit fire. This is the exact same type of plane that crashed off the coast of Brazil, killing 228 people. A cause for that Air France crash has yet to be established.

The flight originated from Osaka's Kansai International Airport bound for the Gold Coast and was carrying 203 passengers and crew.

Jetstar is claiming that the fire took place in a cockpit window which was quickly extinguished by a pilot. But they have already stated that this incident has no connection to the Air France crash. That's a little staggering. We don't yet know the cause of the Air France incident, but already they can rule out a connection?

Jetstar need to pay more attention to the safety of their aircraft. It has been revealed that the last major overhaul of this plane took place in the Philippines. There is one reason for overseas maintenance of Australian planes - cost cutting. And cost cutting can often mean cutting corners.

On another point, an emergency landing due to a cockpit fire should be a major news story in Australia. It should be even bigger when 228 people died in the same type of plane just weeks earlier. But it isn't. While being the first story on the TV news, it received no follow up and has already been removed from the top stories on news websites.

Its reminiscent of the limited coverage given to the in flight emergency on Qantas Airbus flight 72 out of Singapore in October 2008. That incident received such little news coverage despite the fact that 12 people suffered serious injuries, and 100 others had minor injuries. I still don't know how those people fared. Media bias in favor of Qantas and their subsidiaries in Australia? You bet.

This is a good enough time to look back at the Chaser's War on Everything. A couple of years back they covered the topical issue of safety at Jetstar. Seems they were right on the money. Parachute anyone?

About Just Grumpy

Im not a right wing nut job, far from it. I just believe that the world doesnt owe you a living, you make your own luck (was that Kevin Rudd?) and if you work hard you can succeed.

Thats not to say that we shouldnt help those who cant help themselves. I have a firm belief in giving a helping hand up to those who genuinely need it. (please give generously to my linked charities)

I call myself a realist and i want to tell it like it is. Somebody has to speak the truth. Because seriously, what a selfish bunch of insular tools we have become in today's dreamy Australia.

Maybe we arent so different to the rest of the world. And maybe it was always this way.

Anyway, until things change, i remain young and grumpy.
