Suspension? Essendon's Matthew Lloyd Knocks Out Hawthorn's Brad Sewell With Shoulder Bump to the Head - Video
Coming fresh after Lance Franklin's bump on Ben Cousins which saw Buddy rubbed out for two weeks, Matthew Lloyd looks set to be suspended for knocking out Hawthorn's Brad Sewell. This will be a significant decision by the AFL tribunal, given that Essendon are heading into a do or die final against Adelaide.
I would have to say that this hit is worse than the Franklin bump on Cousins, because it appears that Lloyd's shoulder is slightly raised. However, again like Cousins, Sewell didn't have control of the ball when Lloyd bumps him, which rules out the option of a tackle. And Sewell is slightly ducked. In saying that, it is almost a front on bump.
In my opinion, its worthy of a free kick. But a suspension? I'm not so sure. Have a look at the video, what do you think?

I think footballers need to re-examine their priorities. They say they are against violence, putting out these ad campaigns and the like, yet they all rush to the malee and not to their unconscious team-mate despite a couple having to run past him to get their bit of the violent pie! Not one stopped on his way past to make sure he was ok. Sick.
If Franklin get 2 weeks for his bump, then this bump should get at least the same. In saying that I don't think either deserves time on the sidelines.
Lloydy lined that up - it was especially obvious in the third angle. Look at the position of his legs. And the arms out "what did i do" gesture afterwards? Reminds of Barry Hall...
Seeing people get rubbed out for this kind of stuff makes me sick. There was nothing wrong with Llyods bump. Yes it was slightly high but that was only due to Llyodd not getting low enough. Im certain it was intended to be a body bump, as the skipper wouldnt be so stupid to go for the head with the rules these days. Accidental. Deserved a free kick. Nothing more. Our great physical game is being ruined.
