Car Crash Test Video- Head On Smash Between 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air and 2009 Chevrolet Malibu

I think we all know that car safety has come a long way in the last 50 years. But in case you had any doubt, check out the following video of a head on collision at 40mph between a 1959 Chevy and a 2009 Chevy. Its amazing.

40mph is only around 64kmh. Many head on crashes occur at much greater speeds than that. But if you happened to be in a 59 Bel Air, you wouldn't have much hope of survival. In a 2009 Chevy, you are likely to walk away with only the most minor of injuries.

The 59 Bel Air has no seat belts, no padded dash or roof and no crumple zones. The driver as you can see has little chance. In the 2009 Chevy, the testers concluded that there was a chance that the driver might sustain a minor injury to the left foot.

The test was conducted by the Insurance Institute for Higway Safety in the United States.

This is so amazing. Check out the dash on the Bel Air and how far forward it is pushed. Then compare it to the dash on the Malibu - it hardly moves at all. Im impressed.

About Just Grumpy

Im not a right wing nut job, far from it. I just believe that the world doesnt owe you a living, you make your own luck (was that Kevin Rudd?) and if you work hard you can succeed.

Thats not to say that we shouldnt help those who cant help themselves. I have a firm belief in giving a helping hand up to those who genuinely need it. (please give generously to my linked charities)

I call myself a realist and i want to tell it like it is. Somebody has to speak the truth. Because seriously, what a selfish bunch of insular tools we have become in today's dreamy Australia.

Maybe we arent so different to the rest of the world. And maybe it was always this way.

Anyway, until things change, i remain young and grumpy.
