Failure by Australian Customs at Sydney Airport - Julian Matthias Buchwald Allowed to Flee Australia on Fake Indian Passport
I have written previously about the failure of Australian authorities to prevent Julian Matthias Buchwald from fleeing the country. Yes, a convicted kidnapper was actually bailed before sentence. But the story of the incompetence by our Customs officials is hard to fathom.
Buchwald fled to India on a fake passport. That we knew. But he managed to get past the airline passport check as well as Customs officials, merely by dying his hair and applying some fake tan. He then pasted his photo onto a genuine Indian passport.
Now I'm not one for racial profiling as it were, but I'll be darned if this guy looks anything like someone of Indian origin. No surprise i guess, given his German roots.
I guess our customs officials are way too busy learning how not to smile. Apart from the UK and USA, Ive not come across immigration or customs officials who are this serious. Nice way to welcome people to the country.
Perhaps they are also too concerned with preening themselves for an appearance on Border Security. You know, the TV show which shows Customs officials single handedly putting a stop to a growing band of Chinese criminals - grandmothers bringing in "prohibited" food products. Damn those old ladies.
Whatever it is, their incompetence in this matter is staggering. Thankfully, the overly officious immigration chekpoint at an Indian airport stopped him from entering the country. Then again, it would have only taken a cursory glance at the passport to see that he wasnt the real deal.
But, as big an effort as Buchwald made to breach his bail, he was only given another 6 months jail sentence for it. Maximum penalty for this type of crime is apparently 12 months. Makes you wonder what you would need to do to get the maximum.

Sure it was racist. However Somalians beating up Indians doesnt strike me as being a true example of Australian racism.
