Apparently those Don't Be a Dickhead road safety videos are causing a great deal of outrage in the Victorian community. At least that's what the media would like us to believe. Maybe it's true.
If using the word dickhead causes such outrage, then Ive changed my mind. I'm now a big fan of the ads. More of them i say. Because the real dickheads are those people complaining about nothing as per usual. Whipped up into a frenzy over the latest piece of nothingness.
I did discover that the ads were created by Hungry Beast's Dan Illic. Now there is a highly underrated show that hasn't seemed to attract too much outrage. Surprising. It does really push the boundaries at times, often more than the Chaser used to do. Anyways, that's another story.
So there have been a string of complaints apparently to the Human Rights Commission over the portrayal of redheads in the ads. Yes, seriously folks. We don't give much of a toss about the mortality rate of Aboriginals in Australia, but we care about how redheads are shown on screen. Now those are some seriously screwed up priorities.
But it gets worse. There are a whole bunch of nutjobs who have also complained to the Advertising Standards Bureau. You may remember the ASB. They are the sheltered workshop who think that the late night "call me, call me now" ads are perfectly OK to be shown on TV screens, but a harmless Nando's ad isn't acceptable. Go figure folks. Chief workshop worker Fiona Jolly has apparently sent a please explain to Vic Roads. Expect a ruling soon.
Over to you Catherine Tate.
Looks like Media Watch are going to go after A Current Affair regarding the Hey Dad abuse scandal. Rightly so. Trial by media has sunk to its lowest level ever.
As has been stated by numerous lawyers, its unlikely that the accused in this case would ever get a fair trial by the courts.
The Executive Producer Tosspot at A Current Affair, Grant Williams HAS provided a RESPONSE to Media Watch regarding his program's ALLEGATIONS in the Hey Dad "scandal". Excuse my bolding, I'm just taking Grant Williams' lead.
Williams defends trial by media. Its OK he says because they alone are the ones who can run investigations.
I wonder what would happen if someone accused Grant Williams of playing with kids. Let me make it clear, i'm not for a moment suggesting he has. But how would i know? I'm not in a position to judge what he has done in his past. But perhaps someone might suggest that he has, just as Sarah Monahan has done regarding a Hey Dad actor.
Would Grant Williams be so content with the behaviour of ACA in the Hey Dad Matter if Today Tonight led for days on end saying he was a fiddler? Im sure he wouldnt. Glasshouses Grant, glasshouses.
Its all ratings until then isn't it? Its not about doing the right thing. Its about making the cash. Williams, you are a tosser.
STATEMENT BY GRANT WILLIAMS, EXECUTIVE PRODUCER, A CURRENT AFFAIR, NINE NETWORK
I personally salute the courage of Sarah Monahan and every other alleged victim and witness who has come forward to ACA in response to allegations of sexual abuse raised on our program.
All ACA staff connected with this investigation acted with the utmost integrity and sensitivity in their dealings with these matters and I personally appraised NSW Police of the progress of our inquiries from the outset.
ACA has in no way hindered a police investigation - to the contrary - it has in fact CAUSED a police investigation that would NOT have otherwise been initiated.
The numerous victims and witnesses now in contact and being formally interviewed by NSW Police were ONLY identified as a direct result of ACA's reports.
Any suggestion that evidence provided by victims and witnesses could or would be compromised in the event that they WERE or WERE NOT paid to tell their version of events is patently offensive to those victims and witnesses - especially given the nature of the allegations.
It should be further noted that ACA gathered material from other alleged victims and witnesses without dealing with those matters on the program.
Media speculation regarding any possible difficulties that the Crown might encounter should any of these matters be brought before a court is plainly a nonsense. The alternative to the position as it stands would be that NO victims were identified - NO witnesses were identified - and NO investigation commenced - let alone a prosecution.
If these matters were raised on 'Four Corners' I'm sure they'd be widely lauded (at least at the ABC) as a fine piece of investigative journalism.
I appreciate the positive outcome of our reports does not suit the agenda of the Media Watch program.
Thank you for the opportunity to present a response.
Yours sincerely
Grant Williams

So i guess road safety commercials aren't just the domain of the TAC in Victoria anymore. Vic Roads has started making ads which are mostly for broadcast online i think. They are basic ads aimed mostly at the use of mobile phones while driving and use comedy to get their message across. Red heads and emos watch out.
They aren't anywhere near the level of sophistication of the TAC ads we have come to expect. And i worry that if they are actually designed for young people, sadly they miss the mark - i can hear the word lame already. The ads actually resemble TV shows like Comedy Inc. Skit comedy like this may have been funny in the days of Fast Forward in the 1980's or at a school camp but is sadly past its used by date.
I can just see them being dreamed up by some recent graduates of a drama or film making academy, or even worse, university graduates in marketing working at an advertising company. But i suppose every road safety message helps. These are some of the videos from Vic Roads.
Ive not paid much attention to all the media hype surrounding Gary Ablett Jnr and his possible move to the new Gold Coast club when his contract at Geelong expires. Sure, Ive seen all the fuss, but i don't usually concern myself with Geelong matters. Geelong won the flag last year - that's enough pain for any of us to bear...
It doesn't really matter a whole lot to me where he ends up. He is actually one of those rare freaks in the AFL - you know he is good, and it pains you to see him play well against your own team but you cant help enjoying the spectacle anyway.
So it seems Gary has had about enough of all the fuss. Cant really blame him. I happened to read Gary's article which he submitted to the Herald Sun. It was good, damned good. He explains that he will make his decision about moving to the Gold Coast when he is good and ready. And he will make it on his terms and wont do so just to keep the media happy.
Well done to him. I wont say that i hope his team does well this year, but you have to wish him the best. He has gone up a rung in my book.
You can read Gary's article in the Herald Sun here.
Yet another discount airline scam?
For the last couple of months, our TV screens have been bombarded with advertisements from Jetstar promoting their new Mastercard Credit Card. A low 10.99% interest rate the advert screamed, with a 0% balance transfer for 6 months. Sounded good alright.
And they offered these amazing deals for $1 flights for those who sign up to the credit card. Wow. Then they threw in a $50 voucher to use for purchases at Jetstar. Fantastic. Wheres the catch?
Well here it is. Jetstar suddenly changed the interest rate. Well, it depends on which part of the Jetstar website you read. Some parts now say 11.49%. Much of it is still promoting 10.99%. That's sloppy. And i have to say, probably very misleading bordering on the illegal. Because some, (though not all) of the product disclosures or terms and conditions still state the previous interest rate.
The TV advertisement is certainly now 11.49%. So rest assured. The new rate (for now) will be 11.49%. Even if they don't go out of their way to tell you on their website.
However, perhaps the most unethical example of the Jetstar promotion is the fact that since the offer commenced, there has been but one increase to official interest rates. And that was only by 25 basis points or a quarter of a percentage point. So by rights, the Jetstar Mastercard Interest Rate could reasonably have been expected to jump to 11.24%. Every major bank matched the RBA's rate rise - but not Jetstar Mastercard.
But with their heavy promotion and cheap flights offer, they must have convinced tens of thousands to sign up. And a 10.99% credit card interest rate was actually very competitive. But once they've got you...well, they've got you.
I might note that the the Jetstar Mastercard is actually run in conjunction with a financial organisation. Airlines aren't in the business of banking. So who is it? "Card Services is a division of Macquarie Bank Limited ABN 46 008 583 542 which provides and administers credit and is the issuer of the Jetstar MasterCard and Jetstar Platinum MasterCard."
So that's who we can really blame. Or is it? Surely Jetstar has a role to play in this. Perhaps Jetstar and Macquarie are splitting the profits from the price gouge of the extra quarter percent between them.
My advice? It may sound like a great deal - but these guys can jack up their interest rates as often as they like. And there is nothing that you can do about it. Before too long they could just as easily pump the rate to match most of the other credit cards - close to 20%.
According to Jetstar themselves "Macquarie Bank reserves the right to change our interest rates. You will be notified in advance via your statement and national newspapers." In advance? How good of them. Too bad if you have already signed up and owe them money.
So those $1 flights could become a very expensive discount after all. If an offer seems to good to be true, it probably is. Stay well away.
The white trash are out again blaming someone else for their bad parenting. No surprise i guess - they are so semi retarded that they just cant get it.
Trailer Trash Australia Inc spokesperson for March, Debbie Webb is blaming police for the chase which resulted in the death of four people including a family. Who is Debbie Webb? She is the mother of the 18 year old girl Skye Webb who is in a serious condition in hospital. Skye Webb was in the passenger seat of a stolen car driven by Justin Williams when he decided to run from police.
Yes, Debbie Webb is yet another awful parent who just doesn't get it. She wants to blame her trailer style parenting faults on someone else. In this case, its the police. She wants them to pay for the chase. I'm sorry love, but your daughter got into the car with Justin Williams. She made that choice. He was her boyfriend.
Lets get this straight. Justin Williams stole a car. He ran from police. He was chased - as he should be. The guy was a criminal. And now he is dead. Am i upset about the fact he is dead? No who gives a toss? There is always too much grief for the innocent victims. In this case a couple and their baby - Scott Oppelaar, his partner Samantha Ford, and their three month old boy Brody.
This wasn't the first time that Williams had stolen a car apparently. He did the same last year and was due to face charges in court soon. And he was lucky to escape death in a car crash last year. Quite obviously Williams was about 99 cents short of a dollar.
Debbie Webb and her husband Shayne are livid at the police. Williams wasn't to blame. It was the police who were totally at fault for chasing a stolen car. Ah, yes. As if they should just let crime go unpunished. Maybe thats how it works in the trailer park.
I'm sorry Debbie and Shayne. It wasn't the fault of the police. It was Justin Williams. And your daughter made the choice to go out with a total knob. A knob who stole a car. A knob who ran from police. And i might add that she made the choice to enter a stolen car.
We all make choices in life Debbie. Some of us choose to do the right thing. Don't blame others when your own offspring are useless. You are to blame for your poor parenting. Nobody else.
I wasn't around in the era of Senator Joe McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee. But i reckon after watching the spectacle of the Sarah Monahan affair, i have a fair idea of what it must have been like.
Ive seen some drivel published in Woman's Day and on A Current Affair in my time. But this Hey Dad "scandal" almost takes the cake. Talk about trial by media. That's the real scandal.
Here we have a former child star who has apparently sold her story to the highest bidder. One wonders why it took her so long to bring this matter up, and then why she needed to make money from it. And of course her exclusive story was published in that highly reputable journal Woman's Day. The same tabloid rag that gave us the Lara Bingle shower photo and follow up paid story with Lara herself.
Then we have had day after day of stories from A Current Affair, complete with evil music. And there is more to come, with yet another exclusive interview with the girl herself. Yes, Sarah Monahan is appearing on A Current Affair to tell her story over again.
And hasn't Tracey Grimshaw been a treat to watch? As every day goes by, Grimshaw becomes an even greater parody of herself. Her "I Put It To You" lawyer questions to Hey Dad producer Gary Reilly were an absolute scream. I haven't laughed so hard at an ageing and wrinkly woman since i last saw Joan Rivers.
The man in question hasn't been named. But it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out who they allege it to be. Without actually naming him, ACA couldn't have been clearer and most of the Internet forums are abuzz. I wont be naming him. I actually believe in a thing called justice.
Because a paid allegation made to Woman's Day, followed up by a probably paid allegation made to A Current Affair doesn't prove anything. In fact, it makes me suspicious of the whole thing. Do these things properly, and you would have taken it to police for an investigation. Then you keep quiet while they do their job. That's fair and reasonable.
Unfortunately all you need do these days is whisper the word "abuse" and the damage is done. Much as it was in 1950's America. And before you say it, that's not a defence of real abuse. Its a defence of the old Innocent until proven Guilty rule. But that rule often doesn't apply to these types of allegations. Mud sticks very easily in these matters - especially when the attack dogs at ACA run stories night after night.
Some comments on other blogs and forums indicate a belief that Sarah Monahan is just out to make money and seek cheap publicity. They point to the fact that she is trying to get a contract to make documentaries on Scuba Diving. They are curious why it took 20 years to make the sordid accusations and why she hasn't gone to police.
I will note a couple of things without passing judgement and let you draw your own conclusions. Sarah Monahan has at least three websites. On one of her pages on her self titled site - she highlights and celebrates her work on Hey Dad. There are 6 photos of her with the cast as well as numerous videos.
On her second website about Scuba Diving, Sarah has also written a bio piece about her work on her Diving series, where she again highlights her work on Hey Dad. According to Sarah herself "While most Former Child Stars end up in rehab or porn, Sarah decided if she was Going Down, it was going to be somewhere good". Going Down being the name of her proposed TV series.
The same website has a news page, where Sarah herself posts commentary. In one piece on the 11th of January this year, Sarah suggests that a media organisation in Australia would soon be paying for her to come to Australia for an interview. "One of the joys of being a Former Child Star is occasionally, people want to do one of those “Where are they now” type articles. The joy is not in the “did you end up in rehab like all the other kid actors” article, but in the fact that somebody will actually pay for the trip home to ask you in person. So, it looks like I might be headed to Australia in the next month"
On her third website, shrinktankproductions, Monahan appears to specialise in 15 mins of fame publicity and search engine optimization for websites. "If nobody knows who you are, how can they do business with you? Our mission is to help you increase your visibility and get your name out there. We achieve this through a combination of Search Engine Optimization, Social Media and Video Production. Get your 15 minutes of fame without getting arrested."
I'm not suggesting this whole issue is about 15 mins of fame for Monahan. I much prefer to let people form their own conclusions on this one. Those of us with an objective mind have already done so.
Yes, welcome to our great city of Melbourne. Sporting capital of the world. Worlds most livable city. And home to mindless hooligans who think its perfectly OK to smash up a reputable business just cos they didn't go ahead with a hoon racing event.
Protesters turned out in their thousands at the Bob Jane store in Oakleigh to vent their anger about the Easternats event at Calder Park being cancelled. They blocked traffic and terrorised motorists and passers by. They smashed their way into the store causing an estimated $15,000 damage. They stole goods.
I must be living a whole different world. I don't know any of these types of people. Are these bogans? Or are they something worse, like soccer thugs or hooligans?
Is it any wonder there are so many hoon cars impounded in Victoria? We truly are talking about halfwits aren't we? Yes, Melbourne may be one of the world's most livable cities, but it is also the home to a whole lot of simpletons. People with bad parents, too much time on their hands and less than half a brain.
These people show scant regard for the law or even for simple common decency. And these are the same people who smash their cars into trees killing themselves and the people they are supposed to care about.
Its at times like these that I envy the laws of Singapore.
You have to take your hat off to the good folks at Carlton United Breweries. Or is it all Fosters these days? They are consistently one of the few Australian companies to produce clever and witty ads. Remember their Really Big Ad? Classic.
The latest is the Carlton Draught Tingle. When you just need a drink of Carlton Draught, you get the tingle or a feeling right in your goolies. I cant say that i have, but it is a mighty fine drink.
Poor old Maria Cecilia Silva. Little did she know that when she was to arrive in Australia for a visit, she would be subjected to the keystone cops brigade of Customs officials and the AFP.
Arriving from the Philippines into Melbourne Airport, Ms Silva brought with her some ice tea for a friend. Not an uncommon item apparently and certainly not illegal. Hell, Ive even drunk the stuff myself.
But the iced tea apparently tested positive for drugs. Well, that's what Customs and the AFP say anyway. So positive were they that the poor woman was a drug mule, they chucked her in jail and charged her. Even worse, the AFP gave themselves a nice little congratulatory pat on the back with the press release below. Damn they are good - or should that be Fig Jam?
The story got run in all the press. What a victory for the AFP and Customs. Needless to say that our streets are still awash with drugs. Maybe its got something to do with the fact that 95% of all shipping containers still don't get searched. Yeah, 95%. And as much as the Border Security show likes to tell us about their good results in the scanning of mail, much of that still remains unchecked too.
But just so long as we stop little old Chinese ladies bringing in harmless food or herbs, then we can rest assured.
Of course, the prosecution dropped all charges against Ms Silva, five days after she had been in jail with serious offenders. After "careful analysis", the items in her possession were in fact found to be lemon flavoured iced tea. Ahh yes. Pesky bloody stuff that tea.
In the meantime, lets hope Ms Silva gets an apology and some decent compensation. Although if the Haneef matter is anything to go by, i wouldn't hold my breath.
Here's the press release from the AFP:
Drugs found in iced tea packets
Monday, 15 March 2010
A 28-year-old Filipino woman will face Melbourne Magistrates Court today, charged with importing amphetamine into Australia concealed in iced tea packets.
Customs and Border Protection officers at Melbourne International Airport stopped the woman for questioning after she arrived on a flight from the Philippines on Saturday, 13 March 2010.
During a baggage examination, officers became suspicious that the woman may have been concealing drugs within three iced tea packets inside her suitcase.
A Customs and Border Protection Drug Detection Dog reacted positively for the presence of drugs in the iced tea packets and presumptive testing of one of the packets indicated a positive result for amphetamine.
Further forensic testing will be undertaken to confirm the exact weight and purity of the substance.
It will be alleged in court the woman concealed approximately 2.4 kilograms of amphetamine.
The matter was referred to the Australian Federal Police and the woman was charged with the importation and possession of a marketable quantity of a border-controlled drug contrary the Criminal Code Act 1995.
The maximum penalty for this offence is 25 years imprisonment and/or a $550,000 fine.
Ive often wondered how Telstra can afford to maintain their inefficient retail outlets. Because seriously, Telstra stores are in the best and most expensive locations, but very rarely do any customers actually enter them.
Working in Telstra retail must be the best job in the world. Nothing to do. I once counted 10 employees in a store and one customer. And I'm sure the guy was lost.
So how do they do it? One way is their price gouging on global roaming for mobile phones. In this case, data roaming. Sure, they aren't the most expensive of the Australian telcos - Optus takes that title for post paid service.
But Telstra isn't cheap either. And given the massive coverage they have in the corporate sector and those who travel for business, its easy to see that 3G data roaming is a huge cash cow for Telstra. So that's how they do it!
The rates of Telstra Global roaming for 3G data are .015 cents per kilobyte. That's $15 per megabyte or $15,000 per gigabyte. Yes, that's thousands of dollars.
We'll leave it to Telstra to explain:
"3G data services used while roaming overseas is charged at $0.015 per kB for all data used including upload and download with a $0.50 flag fall for each data session initiated by your service. Video telephony and 3G data are available to a growing list of countries. You can also continue to use your Telstra 3G service with over 300 roaming partners in over 170 countries for voice and SMS."
One wonders if that 50 cent flagfall kicks in every time your service drops out then reconnects. Or every time someone sends you an email. Either way, at $15,000 for every gigabyte, who gives a toss about a lazy 50 cents flagfall?
Don't think that you can shop elsewhere for a roaming data service either. Optus charges over $20,000 per gigabyte. Vodafone is a cool $10,000 - or $50,000 per gigabyte equivalent if you are on a pre paid service.
The solution? Turn off your data or buy a local sim card with data pack when you reach your destination. Don't get stung. I'm sure some people have come back to bills in the thousands of dollars.
Going Overseas With an Optus Phone and want to do some data roaming? Then stock up the bank account baby and get ready to pay dearly to surf the information superhighway.
I must admit that when i wrote about Vodafone's data pricing rates for 3G when global roaming, i thought it couldn't get any worse. But i should give Vodafone some credit. Only some, because their $10,000 per gigabyte global roaming charges seem to be the best of a bad bunch.
How much does Optus charge for international data roaming? 2c a kilobyte, $20.48 a megabyte or a very cool $20,480 a gigabyte. No, that's not incorrect. Over $20,000 for every gigabyte.
At least Optus announce their exorbitant charges without the spin, i guess at those highway robbery prices, who needs it?
Browsing, downloading or emailing on your mobile outside Australia will incur data roaming charges. Data roaming charges are $0.02 per KB or $20.48 per MB. Data roaming usage is not included in a Mobile Internet Pack, monthly plan allowance, Blackberry data packs or any other data packs.
And Optus do actually provide some useful advice on their website on how to turn off push notifications on your phone. These push or pull options mean that your phone could be downloading data without you even opening your mailbox or an Internet browser.
But still, over $20,000 for one gigabyte of data? Surely they are kidding us?
This is one of those stories where the ACCC will take an interest if they haven't already. Although its unlikely they can do a whole lot. Price gouging on global roaming by Aussie telcos has been going on for years. We are the most expensive in the world.
I'm sure this issue will get a run quite heavily in the major dailies or evening current affairs shows soon. That's a good thing. People need to be aware of how much they could be up for.
But i do wonder how many people have been caught out by not turning off their data on their iPhone or blackberry. I'm sure some people have been cbeen stung to the tune of hundreds if not thousands or tens of thousands of dollars.
$20,000 a gigabyte? Tell em they're dreaming. Next stop, Telstra.
I wrote earlier about the prices of Vodafone Roaming Data Bundles and how expensive they were. But by God, i hadn't done my full research. As woeful as those roaming data bundles were, they don't even compare with the cost of roaming without it.
But again, you have to love the spin. How much does data cost when roaming on Vodafone? According to their site, very cheap - just 1c per kb. Before you start celebrating there are 1000kbs in a MB. So for every MB, you are up for $10. Yes, ten dollars for every Megabyte.
How much data is a megabyte? Its about one quarter of a youtube song video or a couple of emails with small attachments.
Lets say a friend sends you an email with a couple of high res photos. These days its not uncommon for photos to be 4 or 5 mb each. So for the pleasure of downloading those pics in an email while overseas, you could be hit with a $100 data fee. Believe it.
Too bad if you get through a whole gigabyte or a thousand megabytes. You could say goodbye to ten thousand dollars.
But it gets even worse. Those $10 per mb fees are only for people on a month to month contract or plan. If you happen to be on a prepaid cap - please watch out. Your data costs jump to a whopping 5ckb. Now times that by 1000. Yes - you have $50.
Fifty dollars for every MB. Do the breakdown - what would that work out to for 1gb of data? You guessed it - $50,000.
I'm sure Vodafone are not unique with their pricing. But these rates are almost verging on a scandal. In the history of the Internet, i cant recall anyone charging $10 per MB let alone $50.
So beware when you are travelling. It would certainly pay to call Vodafone before you leave and turn your data off while you are away. Don't even take the chance.
The earth isn't flat - at least that's what we were taught in school. Yet there seems to be a growing trend in corporate spin which may as well be telling us that it is. And sometimes we just swallow it all up.
Vodafone have taken corporate spin to new levels with their published international mobile phone broadband roaming rates and their"Vodafone Roaming Data Bundles". Thanks to Aaron for pointing this out to us - sadly, he learnt the hard way how much Vodafone actually charge to roam overseas with your iPhone or 3G device.
Check out some of this baloney from Vodafone themselves, who argue that "you still want to manage your costs and you don’t want to get back home to a hefty bill!". Ah, yeah...
Generous allowances to suit your download demands
Highly competitive rates per MB
a generous bundle of data overseas
Discounted rates should you go over your bundle allowance
So they are highly competitive, they offer a generous bundle of data overseas and also discounted rates for going over your allowance. Hmm. Putting it in writing doesn't always make it true. Just look at half of the stuff i write. But i digress.
If you sign up to their basic plan, it will cost you $49 per month. They call this a light roaming data bundle. You get a measly 25mb of data per month. That's almost $2 a MB. Anyone who uses their iPhone or other 3G device to surf the web or download emails knows that 25mb is about as pissy as it gets.
But here's the real kicker. If you go over your allowed 25mb in the month, Vodafone will charge you an excess fee, per MB. How much? Well this is where their "discounted rate" comes in. 20% off the standard rate.
It is a tidy $8.19 for every MB over the allowance. That's right. Eight Dollars and 19 cents per MB.
Imagine receiving a dozen or so emails with attachments. Perhaps they were photos or pdfs. You could be up for hundreds of dollars just to read your email.
Many data allowances for plans for the iPhone are around 1gb a month - you can pick the plan up for around $60 Australian for a month. That's 1000 mb data allowance. But if you were to uses the same data overseas with Vodafone and you could be up for many thousands of dollars - just for one month.
Vodafone do have other plans:
The heavy roaming data bundle gets you just 120mb of data a month for $199. If you go over that cap - yes, $8.19 per mb.
The super roaming data bundle gives you 200mb per month for $329. And again, excess charges are $8.19 per mb.
Feel free to ask them about their 1gb or 2gb data roaming bundles. Or instead, perhaps just buy the company.
Make sure you do your research before using your mobile phone overseas. If in doubt, just don't use it. Or better still, pick up an international sim card or buy a pre paid sim card in the country you are travelling. I'm sure there must be some now that come with a data allowance.
Good luck and happy travels.
