Okay im guessing the douchebag who wrote this article is either a man or has never been a single parent? Its really hard as a mother to 3 kids to work fulltime and run a house and also make time for each child which is important for children, sure mothers could go out work fulltime have more money but then something else would have to give...my children come first yes we need money and i have certainley worked partime i did try to workfull time once but after a few months i was worn down and was no good to my kids or my employer, everything is about balance i say that people should not make judgements and think that because someone is choosing to stay home with there kids is anyless than someone who doesnt...i will say tho sometimes going to work really is easier than staying at home.

How can you say these handouts are generous. I'm a solo mum and struggle to support myself and kids on way over triple that amount, I'm earning 900 net per week plus an additional 250 in child support that I receive. I feel so sorry for these women who cannot work due to caring for young children or just being discriminated against and trapped in a poverty cycle, rut, that's hard to get out of. Half of the benefits paid would go on rent these days. If you do get child support you lose most of the FTA. I think middle-class hand outs are a rort, giving money to these smug suburban working families while the poor solo mothers are struggling. Most women don't choose to become single parents, and when they do split from their partners they are facing an insecure future, lose half their combined income, a breakup can really traumatise the children so a mother has all that emotional exhaustion to carry, provide nurturing, food, housing during an already stressful period, they then face very high rentals, (that's if they can get a rental house as there is so much discrimination). They should stop giving middle-class families all these tax benefits and help assist single mothers into secure housing for the benefit of their children. It's unfair to generalise when most women do not choose to become single mothers. More thought should be put into men and their actions. It takes two to make a baby.

Wouldn't you like to check your receipt?, know what you bought?, and how much it cost?, or would you rather put your trust in Woolies, not care, and maybe be overcharged?. You shouldn't have to ASK for a receipt everytime, it should be automatically given to you without question. If more people complained, then maybe something might get done, until then, there's little hope i'm afraid of this changing. Hell, that's just my opinion.

Hey, i am a single mum of two children... I work three jobs and declare all of my earnings and I still receive the ftb payments... I agree that the money recieved by single parents is extremely generous and while I wouldn't want to give it back, I do feel that there are several situations that are more difficult than simply having no husband, just thought I would let you know that in addition to all of the payments I also recieve free car rego, discounted addmission into events and attractions, child care is $7 per child per day ANYWHERE in austraila, discounted telephone and electricity and $5.20 prescriptions and free doctors visits, while I am mature and see the need to work, I feel that the system allows for younger and lazier ppl to sit back, relax and live it up....and it is more secure than any job, because it is guaranteed until your children leave home... any wonder society is against single mums.

Working mothers are feeling the financial struggle - Single mother Kristin Bewley earns about $500 a week through Centrelink, $240 of which goes straight to renting her modest home in Melton South. "It's a real struggle here," she said.

I am a working married mother, I work 4-5 days a week usually & receive what this & many other single mothers receive.
The point of difference?
-They get to stay at home with thier kid(s).
-They receive a 'health care' card so their cost of child-care, medication, kinder & many other things are heavily discounted.
Why would these women want to go out & work? With majority of them being un-educated they would more than likely not be given highly paid jobs.

Their options:
-Sit at home on the single-mothers-dole & receive $500 a week?
-Or work 20, 25, 30+ hours a week & clear (roughly) $500?
I see why some of these women have kids opposed to a career, they earn sitting at home what some of us do working & maintaing a work/life balance.

$1000 a fortnight for looking after your own kids?!

Perhaps some of us should just leave our hsubands, so we can stroll into C-link & demand $$$, health care cards, rebated child care fees & many other 'perks' like rent assitance?

When will the incentive to be able to provide for them selves be realized?
With these benefits - Never.

The public need to be further informed regarding these 'professional baby makers'.

How do Centerlink not question a 'single mother' who comes to them and claims she is having another child & 'deserves' a higher pension, does that not make the organization think... Perhaps she was not single at some stage?

I worked for a some finance company called Money3.
Money3 have been in the media in the past for 'ripping off pensioners' which is pretty much spot on.

We had loans that we un-officially in the office called 'Centre Link Loans.
Where by not having 'an interest rate' on the loans, people were sucked into thinking that we were there to help & give them a good deal.
Customers were made aware of the 'fees & charges' but then reminded that Money3 do not have interst rates... Sounds good.
The Center Link customers were only ever really financed $500 - They would pay back aprox $840 in total (inc fees), more if they incured 'late or dishonour' fees ($50 each).

The amount of women that declared they were in de-facto relationships was extremely common, but when we would revise their bank statements they were pretty much all claiming 'single mother payments' from the government.
.. Ripping off the hard working tax payer whilst sitting in a finance office with their 'boyfriends/partners'.

I left the company because I thought the company moto - 'To operate with integrity' was a joke.

Direct debit for the loan repayments would come out on pension days, that is if the customer hadn't spent all their money at the local TAB the night before, in that case the re-payment would dishonour.

The content on this website is absolutely disgusting! I believe that if you're so miserable and are being cyber bullied for whatever reason DON'T USE FACEBOOK, MYSPACE, MSN AND DEFINITELY A MOBILE PHONE! This way it obviously makes it easier for people to contact you and send rude messages, threatening emails and photos. That way you won't see what other people write about you and will not be vulnerable.

I am a 16 year old girl and have lived without Facebook, Myspace, MSN and a mobile phone my whole life. I do not intend to ever get these so called necessities as they have no value whatsoever. What is the point of going to school and talking to your friends and then going home, ignoring ANY homework you are supposed to be doing and talking to your friends AGAIN! on the internet. Teenagers have just lost communication skills because of these social networking sites. It is none of Mr. Pallant's business to generalise and say that EVERY TEENAGER AND THEIR PARENT are to blame for the increase in adolescent suicides.

To ALL teenagers using these social networking sites I say,
Go and do something better with your life!
Learn to communicate because saying 'like' and 'umm' in every sentence makes you look like a complete idiot. Especially when you are applying for a job.

I know I have gone completely off the topic but I need to say this! I've been bottling it up for YEARS! I am a single parent and on newstart allowance and my 16 year old is on youth allowance and we get less than $800 a fortnight for the two of us together before rent or anything is paid and we cannot afford the basic food rent and normal household expenses and have to get in dept to pay our power and gas as our income for the month is over $300 less than our household bills and that is not counting clothing and other needs

I don't get help from the government because I do not wish to take money from their 3 different dads (don't care what you think) I have a full time job and have done since my first was 18 months old. and during my pregnancy with her and after attended tafe and worked nights(with NO "family" babysitters - I had to pay for it!!!) I now earn $75000 a year because I WORKED for it!!! I didn't have money for petrol or a car so i walked - I couldn't get state housing so we shared a room in a unit and my children now want for nothing and have their mum morning and night......ONLY YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE - SUCK IT UP AND STRIVE FOR MORE!!!
